In December of 2001, in the aftermath of September 11 th, Televate was selected to serve on a team of professionals contracted by the District of Columbia’s Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO). The team was brought together to develop a strategy and program plan for integrating the District’s various public safety radio networks and operations into a unified operational agency named the Office of Unified Communications (OUC). The OUC incorporated interoperability between all City agencies, including the City’s police and fire departments. Televate provided engineering and project management services, in addition to overall program definition, network and system engineering, vendor contracting, construction management, and training and operational procedures.
To meet the project’s goals Televate was immediately tasked by OCTO’s Wireless Program Area with all program definition, management, network and system engineering, vendor contracting, construction management, training, operational procedures and all other project aspects required to successfully accomplish a program of this scale and complexity. Due to these unusually sensitive times affecting security and communications in the Nation’s Capital, an urgent response was necessary. In light of this requirement, Televate completed this program within an 18-month time frame, which was less than half the time normally required for programs of this size and scope.
The system developed by Televate enables tri-band radio communication amoung all District of Columbia public safety personnel and Federal agencies. The system's coverage solutions are amoung the best in the nation with 36 dB building penetration from the tower infrastructure, distributed antenna system for subway coverage, and vehicular repeater capabilities for access to the extremely dense granite structures of the nation's capital.
